The Trade 20 Index of Standard Chartered, a banking and financial services company, revealed that, across 66 global markets, Thailand is ranked eighth of the 20 countries that are most rapidly improving their potential for trade to grow, supported by their readiness in trading, especially e-commerce growth. In addition, the ranking is based on 12 indexes under three main aspects: economic dynamics, readiness in trading, and diversity of exports. (08/10/2019)
As Thailand has succeeded in being a Gastronomy Tourism Hub, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will be releasing more marketing plans and campaigns to make Thailand a Sport Tourism Huband a Training Camp Hub in the region, with a variety of international sporting events. Thailand is becoming a well-known venue and a sports service provider in numerous international events, such as Grand Prix motorcycle racing (MotoGP), Golf LPGA Tour, marathons, triathlons, and more, as well as the wai khru tradition in Muay Thai (a reverential dance performed by a boxer to honor his/her teachers and trainers before fighting). The Ministry of Public Health disclosed that all related agencies have closely monitored the levels of particulate matter and solved the problem by spraying water and cleaning roads to reduce the impacts of particulate matter in Bangkok. Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Minister of Public Health, also stated that smoke haze is a major issue that ASEAN Member Countries would have to tackle seriously, and their citizens should adjust their lifestyles to protect themselves. The Ministry of Education revealed that the Cabinet has approved the drafting and signing of an MOU on the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Special Fund, and assigned the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education to sign the MOU between the Ministry of Education and the Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China. The MLC Special Fund is aimed at engendering future peace and security in Mekong-Lancang member states through cooperation, assistance, and discussion on the basis of mutual interest and respect for laws. The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr. Somkid Jatusripitak, had a meeting with the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Tourism and Sports, in order to follow up on the Governments economic scheme operations. He stated that, in order to stimulate the domestic economy, which has been affected by the global economic situation, the Government has assigned various sectors to release stimulation measures for the fourth quarter of 2019, especially the tourism sector. He added that, as the Chim Shop Chai scheme has helped stimulate the domestic economy and consumption, its second phase will be carried out, with improved accessibility for the public. (04/10/2019)
Regarding the Government's tourism campaigns, Kasikorn Research Center forecast that the total number of Chinese visitors this year will be as high as 11 million, up from 10.5 million last year. About 240,000 visitors from mainland China are expected to visit Thailand during the present long Chinese holiday week, 1-7 October 2019. (04/10/2019)

The Thai Government and the Committee of the Public Relations Sector for the Royal Barge Procession are pleased to invite the public to assemble along the river to greet His Majesty King Rama X and Her Majesty Queen, for the Royal Barge Procession, on the occasion of the Coronation of King Rama X, on 24 October 2019. In addition, in order to congratulate His Majesty, the Government also invites Thai citizens to join Buddhist religious ceremonies in a show of loyalty, which will be held in six temples along the riverside where the procession will be passing by: Wat Rachathiwat Wiharn, Wat Devaraj Kuchorn, Wat Sam Phraya, Wat Boworn Mongkhon, Wat Kharuehabodi, and Wat Rakhang Kositaram. Members of the public are invited to attend an audience with their Majesties the King and Queen, who will travel in a Royal Barge Procession around the city on the occasion of the Coronation of His Majesty the King on Thursday, 24 October 2019. The Government will provide six locations to accommodate 10,700 people, as follows: (1) Santichai Prakan Park (for 1,500 people); (2) Thammasart University (for 1,800 people); (3) Nagaraphirom Park (for 2,300 people); (4) Siriraj Hospital (for 100 people); (5) King Bhumibols 72nd Birthday Anniversary Park (for 1,000 people); (6) Under the Rama VIII Bridge, Thon Buri (for 4,000 people). The Prime Minister, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, explained that Chim Shop Chai is a scheme by the Government to stimulate domestic tourism. He added that, even though there have been some difficulties with registering and joining the scheme, caused by its control system, limited and complicated registration access, and daily registration report, it is a good beginning step into a cashless society, which Thai citizens will need to adjust to and learn about, including the e-wallet system. The Cabinet has approved a budget for repairing damaged roads in flood-affected areas and for the implementation of flood-relief measures, including assistance for flood victims in 32 provinces. They also agreed on an action plan to tackle air pollution, which is on the national agenda. The Ministry of Transport is working to reduce black exhaust smoke from vehicles and realizing the Euro 6 emission standard in the next few years, for a long-term plan. (02/10/2019)
Foreign workers from Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar can pay the foreign employees health inspection and insurance fee via Counter Service at 7-11 stores 24 hours a day, from 16 October 2019 to 15 March 2020. Employers can take their employees for a health inspection at any hospital under the Department of Medical Services. After applying for a visa at the Immigration Office, the inspection fee can be paid at 7-11 stores by showing the barcode documents. A 10-baht fee will be added to each transaction. (02/10/2019)
During the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, had a bilateral meeting with Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, the President of the session. On the occasion, the President expressed admiration for Thailand as the Chair of ASEAN, and its outstanding key roles in promoting regional and international cooperation. The Prime Minister affirmed that Thailand has consistently adhered to the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy as a sustainable development approach, which Thailand always stands ready to share with other countries. In addition, as Thailand established the Equitable Education Fund in 2018, UNESCO has admired the fund as an example of progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) in terms of education, as well. On 24 September, during the Sustainable Development Goals Summitat the United Nations, New York, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha delivered a statement on behalf of the 10 ASEAN member states. He affirmed that ASEAN would achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the help of the three key words of ASEANs efforts acceleration, localization, and cooperation. Firstly, ASEAN was ready to accelerate implementation of the SDGs by using connectivity and tackling inequalities through the use of science, technology, and innovation to improve quality of life for a digital and green ASEAN, as well as protecting and restoring the environment. Secondly, localization of the SDGs would be accomplished by promoting local approaches to policymaking, development, supporting MSMEs, and preparing for ageing societies. Thirdly, ASEAN will enable more cooperation to promote free trade through the multi-lateral trading system and regional initiatives. Finally, he added that ASEAN stands ready to work with the UN and other member states. The launch of the ASEAN Center for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue in Thailand later this year will help build the capacity of ASEAN to implement the SDGs in a concrete manner, both in the ASEAN region and beyond. The Department of International Trade Promotion has selected Buri Ram province as the representative of fascinating provinces in Thailand for China-ASEAN Expo 2019 (CAEXPO 2019), at Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Center, Guangxi, China. Because of its outstanding competitiveness in tourism, its numerous cultural tourist destinations, and its strategic location, which can link with Chinas Modern Silk Road project (Belt and Road Initiative), Buri Ram has been selected this year for the event. On the occasion, Tourism Authority of Thailand will provide OTOP Thai silk garments and Thai massage, including other Thai medical demonstrations in the event. (25/09/2019)
On 23 September, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Prime Minister, General Prayut Chan-cha, delivered a speech at the UN High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage. He stated that the Universal Health Care Coverage scheme applied in Thailand is considered a success because its coverage of Thai citizens is now almost 100 percent. The scheme is based on equality and accessibility for the public. In addition, the Government will be extending the right of patients to have more access to HIV antiviral drugs, as well as elevating the scheme to become a role model in terms of health care development for other countries. The Government Spokesperson disclosed that the Prime Minister, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, will attend the 74thUnited Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in New York, United States, from 23 to 25 September. On this occasion, on behalf of ASEAN, the Prime Minister will make a statement on promoting the Sufficiency Economy philosophy of King Rama IX, as well as strengthening closer ties between ASEAN and the UN, including other countries globally. Moreover, he will be meeting some business clusters, such as the Asia Society and the US-ASEAN Business Council, in order to provide assurances on Thailands economic efficiency and the EEC mega-project, and he will have bi-lateral meetings with the Australian Prime Minister, the UN secretariat and the UNGA President. As it is expected that there will be enormous crowds of people visiting Wat Arun Ratchawararam Temple in order to attend the Royal Barge Procession ceremony, the temple, in cooperation with Bangkok Yai Police Station, will install more lights and renovate a part of its grounds for opening a temporary Royal Canteen, in order to provide food and water to people for three days, from 23 to 25 October. As today (17 September), the Royal Thai Navy is holding a rehearsal for the Royal Barge Procession, the Marine Department will close river transportation during the event, as follows: (1) Ships, tugboats and restaurant cruises are not allowed, from 07.00 to 19.30 hr, from Krung Thonburi Bridge to PhraPokKlao Bridge; (2) The river will be closed in two periods for every kind of boat, from Krung Thonburi Bridge to the Royal Thai Navy Convention Center (12.30 to 15.00 hr), and from the mouth of Bangkok Noi Canal to Wat Suwannaram Ratchaworawihan Temple (15.00 to 19.00 hr). In this regard, Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) will provide buses free-of-charge from the Thonburi river bank to the Phra Nakorn river bank during the event instead, from 10.30 to 19.30 hr in two spots: (1) Phra Pin Klao Bridge and (2) Rot Fai Phran Nok Wang Lang piers to Tha Phra Chan Maharat Tha Chang piers. The Royal Thai Navy, in cooperation with Icon Siam, as well as members of the state and private sectors, will be holding the exhibition Arts on Water, from 25 to 31 October 2019, on the occasion of Royal Barge Procession for the Coronation of King Rama X, at Icon Siam, Charoen Nakhon Road, free of charge. The opening ceremony will be held on 25 September, from 13.30 to 15.00 hr., with the highlight of royal barge chanting and music demonstrated by the two composers and the singers of the ceremony. The event includes photos, showcasing the lacquered and gilded designs and patterns on each royal barge, three-dimensional touchable performances for persons who are visually challenged, as well as images of the formation of the Royal Barge Procession. Held on 24 October, the ceremony will be the first Royal Barge Procession in the reign of King Rama X. The Royal Thai Navy has taken on the responsibility for every stage of operations, preparations and rehearsals. This procession is composed of 52 barges (including the four main royal barges: Suphannahong, Anantanakkharat, Anekkachatphuchong, and Narai Song Suban Ratchakan Thi Kao), manned by 2,311oarsmen. The procession proceeds down the Chao Phraya River, from the Wasukri Royal Pier, passes the temple of the Emerald Buddha, and finally arrives at the Grand Palace. (16/09/2019)
The Times Higher Educations latest edition has ranked Mae Fah Luang University and Mahidol University as the best tertiary education institution in Thailand in a global survey. The latest survey placed Mae Fah Luang and Mahidol universities in the 601-800 band of world university rankings for 2020 from 1,400 universities across 92 countries. (13/09/2019)
