Discussions on Thailands International Cooperation in Disaster Management

Mrs. Margareta Wahlström, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Disaster Risk Reduction, has called on Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn. They discussed disaster management, especially regional and international cooperation in this issue.

The discussion took place on 26 December 2014 on the occasion of the Special Representatives visit to Thailand to attend the Remembrance Ceremony "Ten Years on: Remembering the Indian Ocean Tsunami at the Police Boat T 813 Tsunami Memorial in Phang-nga province.

At the Pullman Khao Lak Katiliya Resort in Phang-nga, both sides also discussed Thailands role in various regional frameworks on disaster management and risk reduction.

General Tanasak reaffirmed Thailands commitment to support the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, to be held in Sendai, Japan, from 14 to 18 March 2015. The conference will be attended by a high-level representative of the Government of Thailand.

On the same day, General Tanasak welcomed Ms. Valerie Amos, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, who also visited Thailand for the Remembrance Ceremony.

The two sides discussed humanitarian assistance and disaster management, as well as cooperation between Thailand and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

The Under-Secretary-General expressed her appreciation for Thailands unwavering commitment to disaster preparedness at every level, especially within ASEAN, and the continued cooperation Thailand has extended to OCHA.

She also highlighted close cooperation between Thai authorities and the local communities in strengthening disaster preparedness at the community level as a role model --- as exemplified by the Ban Nam Khem disaster resilient community model project --- which can be scaled up as part of the best practices in disaster preparedness.
