Great and Good Friends Exhibition to Commemorate 200 Years of Thai-US Friendship

24 March 2018 (Readers 582)

The "Great and Good Friends exhibition to commemorate 200 years since the first contact between Thailand and the United States is being held at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles on the grounds of the Grand Palace in Bangkok.

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun on 20 March 2018 presided over the grand opening ceremony at the museum, with the participation of Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, privy councilors, and members of the Cabinet.

The exhibition displays official gifts exchanged between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Thailand over the past 200 years. Royal gifts include those from King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit, King Prajadhipok (Rama VII), King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), and King Mongkut (Rama IV). These gifts, many of which are being displayed in Thailand for the first time, tell a story of both countries uniting on the basis of goodwill and understanding.

The exhibition will also include a number of rare historical documents never before displayed to the public and several art objects, which have stood the test of time and symbolize the precious, long-standing relationship between the two countries.

The Embassy of the United States in Thailand initiated the Great and Good Friends exhibition, with support and cooperation from relevant Thai agencies to ensure the success of the exhibition. The event is part of the activities to celebrate 200 years of United States Thailand friendship, since the first recorded contact between the Royal Court of Siam and the Presidency of the United States of America.

Thailand and the United States established relations in 1818 and signed a Treaty of Amity and Commerce in 1833, formalizing diplomatic relations. Thailand became the first country in Asia to establish such a relationship with the United States. The ties between the Kingdom of Thailand and the United States of America have grown from strength to strength since the early days of the Rattanakosin era up to the present.

The Great and Good Friends exhibition is open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, between 21 March and 30 June 2018. Admission is 150 baht for adults, 50 baht for students with IDs. It is free for children under 12 years old. Last admission is at 3:30 p.m.
