Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, on behalf of the president of the National Informal Workers Management Committee and the National Workforce Development and Skills Training Committee, has requested the Ministry of Labor to promote employment and skills development among informal workers, who are key contributors to the economy, despite being paid less than most other workers and being uninsured. The latest information on the number of workers in the country reveals that 20.4 million out of the total 37.9 million employed persons are non-system workers who receive less protection and welfare in terms of health and security than in-system workers, with many of them underpaid and not insured with Social Security. The committees have agreed to assign the Ministry of Labor and related agencies to start the process of aid campaigns and compensation for non- system workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, in accordance with the demands received.
