April 9, 2021, Thailandís Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha had a phone conversation with H.E. Mr. Suga Yoshihide, Prime Minister of Japan to congratulate the latter on his premiership.
The Prime Minister expressed pleasure to have discussed with the Japanese counterpart for the first time. As the latter has once been chair of the Thailand-Japan High Level Joint Commission (HLJC), the Thai Prime Minister hoped that close relations between Thailand and Japan would be further forged. Thailand is keen to strengthen cooperation with Japan as comprehensive strategic partners. Under the ongoing COVID-19 situation, the Thai Governments has continued to cooperate with Japanese counterpart to facilitate people and businessmen of each otherís country in accordance with the disease control standard.
The Japanese Prime Minister expressed pleasure for the phone conversation today, and commended Thailandís effective COVID-19 management and control. Japan stands ready to provide support on medical supplies and logistics services to Thailand and other ASEAN member countries, which would help enhance efficiency of vaccine distribution, in the form of emergency grant aid through UNICEF and JICA.
Both parties also discussed economic cooperation. The Prime Minister thanked Japan for constant trade and investment and for its interest in investment in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). Both Prime Ministers endorsed promotion of tangible cooperation and the 5th HLJC meeting between the two countries in a bid to drive forward economic partnership and post-COVID-19 rehabilitation. The Prime Minister also mentioned Bio-Circular-Green Economy (BCG Model), and extended an invitation for Japanese investors to consider using Thailand as their electric vehicle manufacturing base.
With regard to multilateral cooperation, the Japanese Prime Minister expressed confidence over Thailandís role in various areas at the regional level, and Japanís readiness to cooperate with Thailand under the Mekong-Japan Cooperation framework. The Prime Minister also affirmed Thailandís commitment to work closely with Japan as ASEAN-Japan Coordinator for 2021-2024. The Japanese Prime Minister took the opportunity to endorse Thailandís hosting of the 2022 APEC Summit.
Both Prime Ministers exchange views on the current situation in Myanmar on which Japan marveled Thailandís and ASEANís role. Thailand and Japan stand ready to support peaceful and constructive approaches, and commit to provide assistance to Myanmar refugees based on the humanitarian and international principles.Photo Cr.: Royal Thai Government
